As has been reported in the Newspapers, London Borough of Merton planning committee has rejected the Countryside properties application for development on the Liberty Mills site at Merton Abbey Mills, but given outline permission for the intensive development of the remainder of the site. The plans must now go through to the GLA, and other supervisory bodies before final approval.
It will be interesting to see what Government and the GLA make of this application. It complies with both bodies' wish to see intensive residential development on brownfield sites, yet runs contrary to their guidelines for historic and heritage sites.
It seems likely that the relevant departments who drew up these guidelines had not realised that a heritage site could also be a brown field site!
